Battle of the Books Club    stack of books

Coached by: Mrs. Schneider
Elementary Battle of the Books is a club for 4th and 5th graders who love to read.  Up to 12 students from the club will be selected to represent our school at the county-wide competition.  This competition consists of reading selected books.  Each child on the team will read for comprehension in order to be able to answer questions about the books.  This competition resembles a spelling bee in that the student is asked a question and then responds.  Students must fill out an application and take a title / author quiz to be accepted into the club.  Once in the club, students must read and complete assignments by due dates in order to remain in the club.  In January, the final team for competition is selected.  We usually compete in February or March.

Our school media center provides your child with easy visual access to books that are appropriate for
his or her Accelerated Reader level.  But how do you know whether the books you have at home are
included in the Accelerated Reader program?  The easiest and best way to tell is to use AR Book Finder.

AR Book Finder searches books by title and provides information regarding the book’s level
and the points earned for reading it.  Pay special attention to the “IL” or “interest level”.  Interest Level
has to do with the suitability of the book for the child’s age.  For example,  The Lightning Thief by
Rick Riordan is a great book, but it is most suitable for students in grades 4-8.

If you have a younger student with a high reading level, using AR Book  /Finder will help you identify
books that are challenging for your student yet appropriate to their age.
