New Century International Elementary School made Cumberland County history when it welcomed its first classes of kindergartners to its Chinese immersion program.  The students will learn all of their core subjects in Mandarin.  By the time they complete fifth grade, these students should be fluent in both Chinese and English and will be exceptionally well-prepared to contribute to our global economy.  It focuses on development of fluent language skills in a foreign language with 90 percent of the instructional day spoken in a foreign language.  It offers exposure to other cultures and languages.  It also promotes acceptance of different nationalities by encouraging the development    of an understanding of cultures and customs.

Wellness Tip: Eat More Fruits & Veggies

Most people know that eating fruits and vegetables is important for good health, but most of us still aren’t getting enough. This year, let’s participate in Fruits & Veggies – More Matters Month. Eating a healthy diet with plenty of vegetables and fruits can help you lower your risk for heart disease and some types of cancer, maintain or reach a healthy weight, and keep your body strong and active. Here are some ideas to help you and your family fit more fruits and vegetables into your day. Try keeping a bowl of fruit handy where the whole family can see it, cut up fruits and veggies ahead of time so they’re ready for quick, healthy snacks, and challenge your family to try a new veggie or fruit every week. Remember, eating more fruits and veggies can be fun and worth it!
