  • Marvin Ridge High School senior K.J. Brent has been chosen as a Carolina Panthers Community Captain, a program that recognizes outstanding high school football student-athletes who have demonstrated strong leadership skills both on and off the field. 

  • Union County Public Schools seniors, on the average, have scored higher than seniors taking the SAT on both the state and national level since the 2003-04 school year.

  • Susan Samsel, teacher of the Home/Hospital-Medically Fragile, was named a CEC (Conference on Exceptional Children) Teacher of Excellence at the Exceptional Children’s Division-61st Conference in Greensboro.

Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club is safe haven for students

The Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club area director Moses Fox III, at left, plays a game of Air Hockey with students in the club, an after-school program for Union County Public Schools students that is housed at Monroe Middle. The club’s doors opened officially on Jan. 17, 2011, with 24 students signed up to attend. On the third day, however, that number had already doubled. Club organizers held a grand opening Thursday, Jan. 26, 2012.
